JO WATCHED AS Lauren manoeuvred the vehicle into the parking lot in front of The Retreat and pulled the key from the ignition. She spared a glance at Jo seated in the rear and turned to Ben. “I’m just going to confirm my schedule.”

“What’s in the works for you tomorrow?” Ben unfastened his seatbelt.

“I’m scheduled for a very early start on a summit climb. A couple’s paid handsomely to be on top of the summit when the sun hits Smithies Peak, Weindorfers Tower, and Little Horn. On a clear day it makes a spectacular photograph, but it also means a very early start for me.” She got out and gallantly opened the rear door for Jo.

Jo nodded her thanks. I wonder if she realizes what she just did. “Are they experienced climbers?”

“Yes. They were here last year and we tried then. Unfortunately, at the moment when the shot was right it clouded over and stayed overcast for the next five days of their holiday. Apparently they plotted this trip to optimize the possibility of getting the shot they’re after.”

“They’re obviously pretty serious about what they do.” Ben eased himself out of the vehicle. “While you’re doing that, we’ll head down to the tavern. You’re joining us for dinner, I hope?”

Lauren looked at Jo and back to Ben. “Sure. It’ll make a nice change from baked beans and toast. I’ll be there in a moment.”

Jo watched Lauren walk toward the front of the lodge, recalling how she looked in a towel.

Ben bumped her. “Hey. What’s with the silly grin?”

Jo shrugged. “Nothing. Let’s go and get a table.” They walked around the verandah to the tavern.

“Is everything okay between you and Lauren? You hardly said a handful of words to each other on the way home. I thought you might’ve been pissed at her getting you all wet.”

In more ways than one, Jo thought as she opened the door to the tavern. “Not at all. I think she enjoyed making me her crash test dummy. The kids seemed to like it.”

Ben slid along the wooden bench. “That’s good. Because it’ll make great footage.”

Jo opened her mouth to say something as Lauren joined them at the table. “What’ll make great footage?”

“Oh, just the two of you falling back into the water.” Ben leant back against the corner wall of the tavern, a smug look on his face.

Lauren stared at him. “You actually filmed that?”

“You betcha. You should have seen the look on Jo’s face.” He folded his arms over his chest. “Priceless.”

Lauren laughed. “Is it possible to get a still? I’d love it as a photograph.”

Jo playfully slapped Lauren’s arm and scowled at Ben. “I am a serious journalist. What are the two of you trying to do? Ruin my reputation?” She looked at a chuckling Ben and gazed at Lauren, and was surprised to see Lauren’s raised eyebrow, as if in invitation.

Jo sighed in mock exasperation. “I need a drink. What are you two reprobates having? Hang on—Ben, let me guess. One of those fine Tasmanian beers,” Ben nodded.
